What the Time Sensitive Tag Means
Time Sensitive is an Apple iOS notification category, not a Snapchat-only feature. Since iOS 15, apps can flag certain notifications as needing near-immediate attention. When a notification carries that flag, iOS treats it differently from a normal alert: it can still ring or vibrate through Do Not Disturb and most Focus modes, and it appears with a small orange "Time Sensitive" label above the app name on your lock screen and notification banner.
Snapchat uses this system for a subset of its push notifications — mainly snaps and chats it determines are worth interrupting a Focus mode for. The label itself carries no hidden meaning about the content of the snap; it is purely a delivery instruction that tells your phone "show this one now, even if notifications are otherwise paused."
Why Snapchat Marks Some Snaps Time Sensitive
Snapchat doesn't flag every notification this way — most day-to-day snaps and chats arrive as standard alerts. The label tends to show up in a few recurring situations:
- Streak deadlines. A snap or reminder sent as your daily streak window is closing is a common trigger, since missing it breaks a streak you and a friend have built up.
- Direct chats and snaps from close friends. Snapchat's delivery system weights notifications from frequent contacts — the same people who tend to show up on your Snapchat planets and Best Friends list — as more likely to warrant an immediate alert.
- Time-limited content. Snaps and Stories are inherently temporary, so the app leans toward flagging fresh activity as urgent rather than letting it sit unseen behind a Focus mode.
None of this is a signal that something is wrong, that your account is being monitored, or that a specific friend has done anything unusual — it's simply Apple's notification framework being used as designed, applied by Snapchat's own internal rules for what counts as urgent.
How to Turn Off Time-Sensitive Notifications (iPhone)
If you'd rather every Snapchat alert behave the same way — silent during Focus modes, no exceptions — you can turn the setting off per app in a few taps:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap Notifications.
- Scroll down and select Snapchat.
- Tap Time Sensitive Notifications and toggle it off.
With the toggle off, Snapchat notifications will always respect whatever Focus mode or Do Not Disturb setting is active, just like any other standard alert — none will break through automatically.
How to Turn Off Time-Sensitive Notifications (Android)
Apple's Time Sensitive category is an iOS-specific system, so Android doesn't have an identical toggle. Android's closest equivalent is its own priority and interruption controls, which you can adjust to get the same effect:
- Open Settings on your Android device.
- Go to Apps, select Snapchat, then tap Notifications.
- Review the notification categories Snapchat lists (chats, snaps, stories) and turn off or downgrade the ones you don't want breaking through silently.
- Separately, check Settings > Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb and make sure Snapchat isn't added to your app exceptions list, which is what lets specific apps bypass Do Not Disturb on Android.
Because the underlying systems differ, Android users won't see the exact "Time Sensitive" wording — but removing Snapchat from any Do Not Disturb exception list achieves the same outcome: notifications stay quiet until you check the app yourself.
Does It Affect Streaks or Your Snapchat Score?
Turning the Time Sensitive label off does not affect your streaks or your Snapchat score in any way. Both are calculated from actual activity in the app — snaps sent and received, and whether a snap landed within a streak's rolling deadline — not from how or whether a notification was displayed on your lock screen.
In practice, this means you can safely disable the setting without risking a streak: the snap still arrives in your inbox the moment it's sent, and opening the app to check it works exactly the same as tapping through from a notification. The only thing that changes is whether your phone interrupts a Focus mode to show it to you immediately.
